A 26-year-old Florida Highway Patrol trooper was tragically killed in a wreck with a semi early Friday morning during a wrong-way pursuit. It happened on I-95 in St. Lucie County.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted to social media that Fink was "killed in the line of duty while attempting to detain a fleeing felon in St. Lucie County."
According to Florida Highway Safety Director Dave Kerner, Trooper Fink joined in the pursuit of the suspect who made a u-turn on I-95 and began driving the wrong way. Trooper Fink's cruiser was hit by a tractor trailer as he made the turn to follow the fleeing suspect.
The driver of the big rig was pronounced dead on the scene. Fallen Trooper Fink was airlifted to Lawnwood Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries. Then his body was escorted to the morgue in a large police procession.
Fort Pierce Police Department says the suspect eventually crashed his vehicle a mile away and fled on foot. He was later apprehended uninjured. Trooper Fink leaves behind a fiancé, father and stepmother.
The traffic homicides are still under investigation.
