TAMPA -- A Florida county celebrates a big birthday. Hillsborough County is 190 years old today.
It was chartered on January 25, 1834, when Florida was still a territory.
Hillsborough County originally included Pinellas and parts of several other counties, including Polk, Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee, Highlands and Glades, all the way to Lake Okeechobee. But only a few hundred people lived there.
Today the county has around a million and a half residents, adding an estimated 21,000 each year.
