HIGHLAND CITY -- Contractors with digging machines and dirt are starting to fill up that 60-foot-deep sinkhole that opened up in a front yard Saturday, in the Highland City area south of Lakeland.
Polk County's emergency management director, Paul Womble, says they'll pour in sand and then clay, to stabilize the hole while engineers decide what needs to be done next.
There appears to be no damage to the nearest house.
Womble says neighbors have been understandably concerned, but are glad to see workers and equipment on the scene.
The hole has expanded onto a road's right-of-way, which is why the county has gotten involved, but so far the county has been able to keep Royal Crest Drive open.
