A phone scam is making the rounds in Martin County and authorities have doubt as to whether they'll ever catch the crook.

The callers says that there is a warrant for your arrest and your bond is $50,000 but if you pay them $5,000 now, you'll get a court date and they'll reimburse you the money.

Chief Deputy John Budensiek with the Martin County Sheriff's Office tells CBS 12 News that he was shocked at how sophisticated and convincing the scammer was when a former employee shared audio from a phone call with the man.

"This scammer used our employees' names - real names - the would-be victim said ‘no, I think you’re scamming me. Have dispatch call.’ They hung up and they actually called back with dispatch’s number."

He says no member of law enforcement will ever call you and ask for money. If there is a warrant out, deputies will simply show up to make an arrest.

Budensiek says deputies aren't too optimistic about finding the scammer and holding them accountable. They tried to track them back through subpoenas and were unsuccessful.
