Collier County, FL - A 31-year-old man was arrested following the accidental shooting of a 4-year-old child at a Southwest Florida home on Christmas night.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 4-year-old child was shot after deputies responded to a Naples residence following an emergency call about the injured child.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the child had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, between the ankle and calf.
The shooting transpired during a Christmas gathering at the residence.
The homeowner, a relative of the suspect, identified as Diego Diaz-Martinez, retrieved a firearm from a bedroom safe to show his Diaz-Martinez, who was holding his daughter at the time.
Diaz-Martinez, while handling the firearm, accidentally discharged it into a wall.
The sound of the gunshot was followed by the child's cries.
As deputies sought more information about the incident, some family members present were uncooperative or unaware of the details.
Subsequent medical examination revealed that the child suffered a broken tibia.
Diaz-Martinez has been charged with multiple offenses, including shooting into a dwelling, child neglect with and without great bodily harm, and the use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol.
