Opa-Locka, FL - A Florida Highway Patrol trooper's high-speed pursuit took a surprising turn when their PIT maneuver on a suspected fleeing vehicle ended up targeting an Opa-Locka police captain.
At around 10:35 PM on November 29th, Trooper Walner Wroy received reports of a reckless driver leaving a traffic stop on State Road 826.
Spotting a dark-colored Kia Stinger matching the description, Wroy initiated a pursuit with sirens and lights activated.
The chase continued for several miles as the Kia ignored red lights and weaved through traffic.
Fearing the driver posed a risk, Wroy executed the PIT maneuver on Northwest 12th Avenue, causing the vehicle to spin out.
However, the moment the Kia came to a stop, an unexpected development unfolded.
The driver, instead of being a suspected criminal, identified himself as Captain Cory Krotenberg of the Opa-Locka Police Department.
Opa-Locka police clarified that Krotenberg was involved in a multi-agency gang task force operation at the time.
He was pursuing a suspect vehicle linked to a violent crime with the assistance of a police helicopter overhead.
Both the FHP and Opa-Locka police defended their officers' actions.
FHP stated that Wroy acted based on "available information and reasonable belief," while Opa-Locka maintained Krotenberg did not violate any departmental policies.
