Lee County, FL - A horrifying incident unfolded on Monday night when a stolen Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a reportedly drunk driver, crashed violently into the back of an innocent driver.
Police say the accident occurred on San Carlos Boulevard at Majestic Palms Boulevard around 8:41 p.m.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office says the stolen vehicle was reported to the Fort Myers Police Department 21 minutes before the collision occurred.
The impact was so forceful that medical professionals suspect it triggered a heart attack in the victim of the rear-ended vehicle.
The driver, identified as Amber Collins, was allegedly under the influence and speeding at the time of the crash.
In a desperate attempt to evade authorities, Collins abandoned her wrecked car, hopped over the median, and fled into an empty field.
However, her escape was short-lived as Lee County Sheriff's Office K9s quickly tracked her down in the nearby woods.
Upon her arrest, Collins failed a breathalyzer test and was arrested on charges of DUI, hit and run, and grand theft auto.
She is currently held without bond in the Lee County Jail.
