Man Arrested for Car Surfing in South Florida Home Depot Parking Lot

Merritt Island, FL - A man was taken into custody on Monday after allegedly jumping from car to car in a Home Depot parking lot in Merritt Island, resulting in significant damage to multiple vehicles.

Police say 36-year-old Michael Banks now faces charges related to the incident commonly known as "car surfing."

The incident occurred at approximately 1:55 p.m. at the Home Depot located at 200 N Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island.

According to deputies, they were alerted to the scene by a witness who observed Banks climbing on top of a van and subsequently jumping onto a Nissan truck.

Banks continued to jump from the truck to an SUV, then to a Jeep, another SUV, and finally a sedan.

As a result, the hoods and roofs of several vehicles sustained damage, causing thousands of dollars in estimated repair costs.

During questioning by deputies, Banks admitted to engaging in "car surfing" activities after leaving Home Depot.

The owners of the Nissan truck and sedan estimated that the cost to repair the damages on each vehicle would exceed $1,000.

Banks now faces two counts of criminal mischief, each carrying a cost exceeding $1,000.

He's currently detained in the Brevard County jail with a bond set at $2,000.
