Deputy Faces Charges for Unlawful Taser Use on Man Filming Traffic Stop

Dania Beach, FL - A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy is facing four criminal charges for unlawfully using a Taser on a man filming a traffic stop in Dania Beach.

Deputy Carlos Ferrufino is facing criminal charges following an internal investigation that found that he acted unlawfully after using a Taser on a man filming a traffic stop in Dania Beach.

The incident occurred on January 25th, 2021, when Ferrufino responded to a traffic stop as a backup deputy.

Ferrufino used his Taser on the driver and then used it on someone else when relatives of the driver came outside of their residence and started filming the interaction.

Ferrufino swatted the cellphone from the man’s hand and tased him.

He then took the phone but never submitted it as evidence.

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright announced that Ferrufino is facing four criminal charges, including two counts of misdemeanor battery, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of petit theft.

Ferrufino turned himself in to the Broward Main Jail on Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a news release that law enforcement officers are not exempt from following the law, and there are consequences for breaking the law, even if it means bringing charges against one of their own.

As a result of the incident, Ferrufino has been suspended without pay.
