(New Port Richey, FL) -- A quarantine is in effect for parts of southwest Florida to combat the invasion of a dangerous snail.
The giant African land snail can consume at least five-hundred types of plants, which is potentially devastating to the state's ecosystem. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the snails also pose a serious health risk to humans since they carry parasites.
Efforts are underway to get rid of the species in Lee and Pasco counties. The giant African land snail has been eradicated from Florida twice already.
