The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for more than three dozen people in the waters off Florida.

According to a statement today from the military branch, a good Samaritan rescued a man who was clinging to an overturned boat about 45 miles east of Fort Pierce on Saturday.

The survivor says 39 people were on board with him when they left the Bahamas.

They encountered rough seas, causing the vessel to flip. The man said nobody was wearing a life jacket.

All of the others remain missing and a search is underway in the air and in the water.

The Coast Guard thinks it was a smuggling operation.
