Palm Beach will be the latest county in the state to get a new area code.

The Florida Public Service Commission this morning approved a plan to create one because the 561 area code is expected to run out of numbers in the year 2023.

"Florida is growing. We have a growing, modern economy and that means more telephone numbers from new businesses and older businesses that are growing, adding lines, to all of these young folks getting their first phone."

Commission Chairman Gary Clark says existing customers would keep their numbers, but 10-digit dialing will be necessary, meaning the area code will have to be included with the seven digit phone number being dialed.

He says in Palm Beach, that will happen even before the new area code is implemented to accomodate the new "988" National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which makes its debut next year.

The numbers for the new area code have not yet been chosen.

Several other Florida counties have gotten new area codes in recent years to keep up with population.
