Are you owed money from the Florida Prepaid College Tuition program?

Spokeswoman Meredith Westheimer says more than 30,000 families are owed an average of $4,700 each.

"About 18 months ago we did a historic rollback in reducing prices and it resulted in some refunds, quite a bit obviously. And we just want to let people know, maybe that could be you. So log into your account, check it out. You could be owed some money."

After year-over-year price hikes, a plan instituted by then-Governor Rick Scott to make college more affordable led to no major increases in tuition rates at Florida's public colleges and universities for the past six years.

Westheimer says that if you log into your account and see that you're owed a refund, what you do with the money is up to you.

"You can take it back, you can roll it over to another kid. Or you could roll it into a (Florida) 529 Savings plan, or you could just take the refund and maybe have an extra Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah, whatever you celebrate."

The money could also be used to pay for your current college student's books, housing or technology needs.

She says you may want to use the money to start a new plan for a second child.

The $50 application fee is being waived for people who sign up for a plan before October 31st, to be automatically enrolled in February.

Westheimer referenced the Florida 529 Savings Plans. Here is more information on those.
