The governor recently announced a plan to give $5,000 bonuses to cops who leave other states and come to work for a police department in Florida.

The money would also go to new officers who sign up to work in law enforcement here for the first time. The Legislature will take it up in January.

"It's a good start. It really is because right now it's very very hard to recruit, you know to get good qualified individuals to be a police officer or even a correction officer."

John Kazanjian, President of the Palm Beach County and Florida chapters of the Police Benevolent Association, says it shouldn't stop at new recruits.

"You can't forget about the men and women in the trenches for the last 5, 10, 15, 20 years."

Kazanjian says he's heard that veteran Florida officers may also have more money coming their way...and he's hopeful that will be the case.

"Those salaries have to go through the Legislature. And that's why I'm counting on the Legislature and the governor to get those state raises."
