Governor Meets on Red Tide, Pinellas Tackles Dead Fish

ST. PETERSBURG -- Experts told Governor Ron DeSantis that the red tide bloom currently plaguing Pinellas beaches is not a product of the spill that discharged wastewater from an old phosphate site into Tampa Bay.

University of Florida scientist and professor Tom Frazer says the red tide that has moved up into Pinellas has been sitting offshore of Southwest Florida for months.

The governor's panel agreed that forecasting and mitigating the effects of red tide remains a challenge.

As that discussion was going on, front end loaders were moving along beaches near the Dunedin Causeway, scooping up piles of dead fish and loading them into dumpsters. It's more cost-effective than putting out work crews.
