Deputy Shoots Axe-Wielding Intruder

The FDLE is reviewing the actions of an Orange County deputy who shot an axe-wielding man who broke into her home.

According to Sheriff John Mina, the woman was in her Apopka home with her children when a man with an axe broke through her back door and made his way inside.

The deputy used her service weapon and shot the intruder several times.

Sheriff Mina says deputies were already responding to the area because neighbors reported the man tried to break into several homes in the neighborhood. The fast-acting deputies were able to use tourniquets to save the intruder's life. Mina says the man is expected to survive.

Mina says the deputy is understandably shaken, but was not injured in the altercation. He says she took appropriate action to defend her family.

The intruder is facing a series of charges and will be arraigned once his condition has stabilized.
