Hillsborough Sheriff's Office Worker Fired, Accused of Ripping Off Business

VALRICO, FL -- A tradesman who used to work for the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office until last week is now on the wrong side of the law.

Deputies say August Mastropole, 40, created a false credit account at Home Depot and used it to buy about $600 in merchandise back on June 19, including three $100 Visa gift cards, which he later sold.

The account was registered to "Bombon Constructions". The business owner says he doesn't know Mastropole and didn't open an account at Home Depot.

When deputies questioned Mastropole, they say he claimed he used a card from another company.

"We hold members of this agency to a higher standard," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "We are fortunate that our skilled detectives (caught) Mr. Mastropole before he could defraud anyone else."
