Jupiter Residents Show Up To Support Police In Their Pay Negotiations

More than a hundred Jupiter police officers showed up at the Town Council chambers Tuesday night to push for raises.

There were plenty of supporters in attendance as well, who want to see Jupiter's policy to go from merit-based raises, which means each officer's supervisor may decide whether they deserve pay increases to a 12-year step-plan, which would give automatic raises to cops in the department. That would also increase the maximum salary an officer could make in a year by around $8,000.

Currently, the most they can make is under $80,000, not including stipends.

One supporter of police raises pointed out that the town manager, whose handling negotiations with the police union, make considerably more than the highest paid officer. The town manager's salary is over $215,000 annually.

According to the Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association, 16 officers have left the Jupiter PD for other agencies since 2013, in search of better pay and benefits. Representatives are concerned that more will follow suit if something doesn't change.

The negotiations will continue at a public meeting next Thursday.
