LISTEN: Military Appreciation Month Begins With Today's Loyalty Day

We're saluting our troops as Military Appreciation Month kicks off.

Designated as a yearly holiday by Congress back in 1958, May 1st is Loyalty Day.

F-22 Raptor pilot Major Paul Lopez says, "It's essentially a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United State and just to reflect on the proud heritage of our American freedom."

He promises a simple gesture matters to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect us.

"Sometimes you just don't know what to say, but a 'thank you' can go a long way... I don't think it ever gets old, definitely not trivial. It means that, hey, somebody saw a military member in uniform, and they took time out of their day, out of what they were doing, to stop whatever they were doing to walk on over and say, 'hey, thank you.'"

He also suggests asking about their job and why they joined the military.

You'll be able to show your gratitude to Major Lopez and other military men and women this weekend as they participate in the Fort Lauderdale Air Show.
