LISTEN: Marlins Beginning Weekly Food Distributions

The Miami Marlins and the Miami Marlins Foundation are expanding their mission to help South Floridians during the coronavirus.

Starting tomorrow afternoon and every Wednesday through the month of May, they are teaming up with Farm Share to host drive-through food distributions for about 500 families.

Because Marlins Park has a COVID-19 testing site, people are being asked not to get in line for meals and/or non-perishable items until 12:30 p.m. for the distribution that begins at 1:00 p.m.

The distribution site will be set up on the east side of the ballpark, while the testing site is on the west side.

Miami Marlins Foundation Executive Director Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza says police will be there directing traffic to make sure both lines move smoothly.

Egusquiza adds, a second weekly drive will begin next Tuesday at the same location at the same time. They, too, will last through the month of May.

The Home Plate Meals Relief Fund is also handing out 1,700 meal coupons to children, seniors, and impacted working families. They'll be able to redeem them for Performance Kitchen meals at Walmart and Winn Dixie.

Egusquiza says, "We're really trying to partner with as many organizations that we can to ensure we're providing the much needed resources for food security for our community and everywhere possible."
