Miami Art Week Begins

Miami Art Week officially gets underway this afternoon with the VIP Preview of Art Miami

More than 160 international galleries are displaying the contemporary and modern works of more than 800 artists at this year's event set up along Biscayne Bay between the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways.

"It's the most important destination event in America for the arts in relation to arts fairs," says show director Nick Korniloff.

In fact, he stresses Art Miami is the top attended fair in America and second most popular in the world.  Estimates are that 80,000 to 85,000 people will walk through the tents.

Calling this fair "very approachable and very accessible," Korniloff expects sales will be brisk.  "Knock on wood our economy has been very good, and there's a level of confidence and the auctions have been strong leading into the fair."

He adds with our internationally fueled real estate boom, there's lots of extra wall space for Picasso, Chagall, Warhol and Banksy masterpieces.

Art Basel opens tomorrow at the Miami Beach Convention Center for private viewing.
