Florida News That Impacts You – June 18th, 2021

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • Governor DeSantis signed more bills into law on Thursday includingHB 183, which expands Florida’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity. The department identifies needs in communities and funds specific projects through grants advocated by local leaders. 
  • Another new law, advocated by CFO and Chief Fire Marshall, Jimmy Patronis, Requires the state’s Risk Management Trust Fund to provide insurance for firefighters who are battling cancer. The new law, which takes effect July 1st, also provides additional protections for victims of sexual harassment and fraud. 
  • The Express Preemption bill was also signed into law. Under the law local governments won’t be able to mandate inclusion of electric charging stations in order to operate within a local community, instead the state will build 34 charging stations with most being located on I-95.
  • According to the Mesothelioma Center, Florida is the second-best state for senior health in the country and three cities were in the top six nationally for seniors. Sebastian-Vero Beach, Naples and The Villages.
