Playwright and Emily in Paris actor and Jeremy O. Harris was arrested at Naha Airport in Japan for suspicion of smuggling drugs, an Okinawa Regional Customs spokesperson confirmed to Reuters on Thursday (December 4).
Harris, 38, who plays Grégory Elliot Duprée on the popular Netflix series, was allegedly found to be carrying 78 milligrams of crystal containing MDMA in a tote bag at the airport. The actor is currently being held in an Okinawa prison, an Okinawa Regional Customs official confirmed to Reuters.
A criminal accusation to begin formal charging proceedings was reportedly filed by local customs officials on Thursday, though it remains unclear whether Harris entered a plea or obtained legal representation in connection with his arrest. The American actor traveled from Britain to Okinaway with a layover in Taiwan and planned to sightsee prior to his arrest.
Harris appeared in five episodes of Emily In Paris, as well as playing smaller roles in the Gossip Girl reboot and What We Do in the Shadows. The 36-year-old is best known for writing the Broadway hit Slave Play, which received a record 12 Tony nominations and lost them all.
The writer was also credited for co-writing the Zola screenplay and co-producing the HBO series Euphoria. Harris also has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama.
