Today is Election Day for six South Florida municipalities. Hialeah, Highland Beach, Homestead, Miami, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles are holding elections. It’s also Primary Day for voters in South Florida’s 20th Congressional District. The winners of today’s primary elections will face off January 11th in a general election to replace the late Alcee Hastings in Congress. 

Florida’s had its first back-to-back days with fewer than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases reported. On Sunday, 945 new cases were reported and 949 on Monday dropping Florida’s weekly trend for cases to the lowest level since June 25th. Florida continues to report the lowest population-adjusted COVID-19 cases in the country. As for hospitalizations, they fell below 2,000 for the first time since July 1st, at the onset of the Delta surge in cases. Entering Tuesday there were 1,965 Floridians hospitalized with the virus. 

In other news, the Seminole Tribe has officially introduced sports betting to Florida. Legalized as of October 15th, the Tribe started with a soft launch of online sports betting. While the Tribe declined to comment on the launch, the Seminoles’ Hard Rock Sportsbook is now allowing users to place bets through their app. Last week the Tribe confirmed it made its first monthly payment as part of the new Compact to the state.
