Florida News That Impact You – May 23rd, 2021

Florida’s coronavirus trend continued to meaningfully improve through the weekend. Entering this week, Florida is averaging 2,619 daily cases over the past week. On the vaccine front, over ten million Floridians have now been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This includes nearly 8 million who’ve completed a vaccine series. While those seeking first vaccination doses have considerably slowed in recent weeks, more Floridians received a first dose of a vaccine last week than the prior week for the first time in over a month. 

In other news, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, 85,000 additional jobs were added in Florida in April. Florida’s total workforce is now only 106,000 people shy of the record high employment reached prior to the pandemic. Florida’s unemployment rate rose from 4.7% to 4.8% as more Floridians are attempting to reenter the workforce. Broward’s unemployment rate stands at 5.3%, while it’s 6.9% in Miami-Dade.

Lastly, Governor DeSantis promised to act against recent efforts to introduce elements of Critical Race Theory in Florida’s Schools at the district level. The Florida Board of Education is currently considering a proposed rule to prohibit the teaching of CRT in Florida’s schools.
