Miami TV Crew Attacked While Reporting On Story About Violence

A crew from a Miami TV station was attacked on Wednesday, May 12, in Miami Beach, reports NBC6.

Ironically, the TV crew was covering a story about efforts to stop violence in the city.

The crew was from WFOR-TV, a CBS affiliate, and they were reporting on the city's recent decision to move the time of "last call" for alcohol to 2:00 A.M.

During the reporting, they saw a fight taking place near 5th Street and Ocean Drive.

One of the people involved in the fight attempted to stop the photojournalist from filming and ended up knocking his camera down and causing the video to blackout, reports NBC6.

The reporter called the police and reported the incident. They continued to follow the group and two different people eventually attacked the crew and struck the camera.

Police eventually detained two people near 7th Street and Ocean Drive and took them into custody on charges of felony criminal mischief and battery.

The station's website confirmed that both the reporter and the photojournalist are okay.

“Last night, while reporting a story about efforts to reduce violence on South Beach, CBS4 journalists were attacked on the job. Our crew was shoved and punched during the incident and some equipment was damaged. First and foremost, we are relieved to hear from our colleagues that they were not injured," WFOR-TV said in a statement.

"We also want to acknowledge and thank the police officers who responded to the scene. CBS4 is dedicated to covering the issue of community violence and will continue to pursue this important reporting."
