Florida News That Impact You – April 7th, 2021

The increase of COVID-19 cases continued to increase on Tuesday as the Florida Department of Health reported 5,556 new cases. As for vaccines, over 6.4 million Floridians have now been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a vaccine based on the most recent vaccine report.

Florida received a $194 million grant from the CDC to expand vaccination programs across the state. The stipulation is that 75% of the funds are used to expand vaccination efforts for minorities.

All FEMA operated vaccination centers in Florida have officially switched from the two-dose Pfizer vaccination to the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The sites, located in Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville are now offering 3,000 daily doses. That's up from 500 per day previously.

The evacuation of residents near the Piney Point reservoir near Tampa has ended as state officials have stabilized the breach. There’s greater clarity as to why issues arose in the first place. The company responsible for the maintenance of the reservoir, HRK Holdings, filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and is currently controlled by a New York based hedge fund.
