Florida News That Impact You – February 23rd, 2021

Some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

Florida’s COVID trend continued in a positive direction on Monday as the Florida Department of Health reported 4,151 new diagnosed cases. The overall weekly trend for cases is the lowest since November 15th.

Also, Florida’s shortage of new vaccines showed up on Monday with only 3,048 total vaccinations taking place over the previous day. That total is the fewest vaccinations to take place in Florida since New Year’s Day. Florida has begun to receive delayed shipments of Moderna vaccines after last week’s supply was delayed due to the winter storms throughout the Midwest.

On a related note, Florida’s Department of Emergency Management stated Publix locations are set to receive 70,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week from the state. The final number due to Publix locations will be higher as Publix is also set to receive vaccines from the federal government.

Lastly, effective today, Miami’s Jackson Health System is the first in the state to begin vaccinations for Floridians who weren’t part of Florida’s originally identified Phase 1 program. Citing waning demand for vaccination appointments, Jackson will begin vaccinations for Floridians 55 and older with at-risk conditions for COVID-19.
