Buildings throughout South Florida and the nation are expected to be bathed in amber-colored light tonight as a part of what the Presidential Inaugural Committee is calling a national COVID-19 Memorial.
Among the key Miami-Dade building being illuminated today are the Freedom Tower, Hard Rock Stadium and the Miami-Dade Courthouse.
Church bells will also ring at 5:30 memorializing coronavirus victims. In Tallahassee, Florida's Capitol will participate in the national moment of unity and remembrance.
South Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson says it's important to put the nearly 400,000 people who have died of the virus in America in the spotlight.
"I think that it gives some solace to the families of these victims because is so many instances they were not able to give them a proper burial or be there with them when they passed away in the hospital."
Late last year she organized COVID-19 mock cemeteries in Miami and North Miami where family and friends could write the names of victims on headstones.
The Representative is now preparing to open a senior vaccination site at her Liberty City family health center, "and I'm going to kick it off right in the cemetery as we pay homage to others who have died since the last ceremony that we had."
