This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.
It has taken two (or three) attempted buyouts of a Boca based Office Depot by Staples. After a 2016 attempt to buy the company was thwarted by local officials worried about losing the headquarters and potential headwinds with federal regulators, Staples is now back with a $2.1 billion offer to buy the company. The offer is $4.2 billion below the 2016 offer.
In other news, on back of over 11,500 new daily reported COVID cases on Monday, Florida’s daily average trend for cases rose again to just under 16,000 per day over the past week. A rise in cases has continued in every zip code in South Florida over the past week.
Florida immunized 28,000 Floridians on Monday with a COVID vaccine. The Florida Department of Health’s tracker now shows 548,000 Floridians who’ve received at least a first dose of a COVID vaccine. Approximately 40,000 people have received two doses completing the vaccination process.
Lastly, FPL is preparing a four-year plan for submission to the Florida Public Service Commission. Under the plan power rates would rise by an average of 3.6% per year. The company is citing ongoing sustainable energy investment as a primary catalyst behind the proposed increases.
