Florida News That Impact You – January 6th, 2021

This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impact you in South Florida.

With over 15,000 additional new COVID cases reported by the Florida Department of Health on Tuesday, Florida’s daily average of news cases has once again risen to a new high exceeding 14,000 daily cases. Daily reported cases continue to rise in all but one south Florida zip code.

And, based on tracking data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, Florida has received the third most COVID-19 vaccine doses to date. According to shipment data, 964,950 doses in total have now been shipped to Florida. Those eligible in Florida’s phase 1 vaccine plan include seniors 65+ and frontline medical workers. Totaling approximately 4 million people.

On a related note, select Publix pharmacies will be offering COVID vaccinations. In an effort to expand the footprint of vaccine distributions across the state, Governor DeSantis said Publix will participate in the state’s vaccination program. The first locations to receive vaccines will be in Citrus, Hernando, and Marion counties.

Lastly, South Florida is set to gain yet another relocating New York financial firm. Virtu Financial is moving approximately 75% of its operations from New York City to Palm Beach Gardens. Virtu is the fifth major firm to announce a move to South Florida over the past year joining Citadel, Elliott Management, Goldman Sachs, and Icahn Enterprises.
