Florida News That Impact You - Jan. 4th, 2021

This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

After a record 21,000 daily new COVID-19 cases were reported by the Florida Department of Health on New Year’s Day, Florida starts the first full week of 2021 with the highest average daily case count to date. Florida is currently averaging 12,900 daily cases which exceed the prior daily average highs from mid-July.

There are new laws now in force in Florida with the start of the New Year. They include the raising of the state’s minimum wage to $8.65 per hour, the official ban of greyhound racing statewide, and the employer mandate for an immigration status to be checked using E-Verify.

In other news, South Florida Representative Brian Mast has announced he’ll join the Republican effort in Congress to contest the Presidential election results in several states as they’re presented on Wednesday.

Lastly, Disney has reopened the park hopping option for the first time since the pandemic began. Park hopper passes may once again be purchased allowing visitors to travel between the Magic Kingdom, the Animal Kingdom, and Epcot theme parks.
