Florida News That Impacts You; Nov. 16th

Some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida include Florida posting the highest daily total for new COVID-19 cases since July 25th with over 10,100 on Sunday. The daily average has risen to 5,900 new cases daily over the past week. That’s the highest weekly average since August 15th. Adjusted for population Miami-Dade has the highest incident rate in South Florida, followed by Broward and Palm Beach County. 

On a related note, several South Florida officials are calling on Governor DeSantis to implement a mask mandate statewide, or at a minimum to allow for local officials to impose them once again. After separating Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties from the rest of the state so local officials could set their own COVID policies for the first few months of the pandemic, DeSantis ended the carveout over the summer.

In other news, NASA and SpaceX successfully launched the Dragon spacecraft, Resilience, from the Cape Sunday night. The mission sent four astronauts, three Americans, one Japanese to the International Space Station. This mission is widely viewed as the start of commercial space flight.

Lastly, a record number of Burmese pythons have been removed from the Everglades this year. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, approximately 4,000 pythons have been removed as part of the python removal program this year and it passes the total removed in 2019.
