Florida News That Impacts South Floridians - Oct. 28th

This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

Over 6.4 million Floridians have already voted as of Tuesday’s update from the Florida Division of Elections. 302,000 more Democrats have cast ballots than Republicans on back of a surge of vote by mail ballots, however, Republicans have outvoted Democrats for seven consecutive days, including outvoting Democrats by 52,000 votes in the prior day. All Floridians with vote by mail ballots should now drop them off in person at a drop box, which are available at most early voting sites. Tuesday was the last day state officials recommended mailing a vote by mail ballot to ensure they arrive in time.

In other news, Florida’s economy continues to outperform economists' estimates. After Florida produced $177 million in more tax revenue than expected in August, the gains were even larger in September. The state beat revenue estimates by greater than $230 million last month.

Lastly, Governor DeSantis announced Florida is using a $5 million grants from the US Department of Labor to help recovering addicts enter the workforce through workplace training. The new initiative is called Support to Communities: Fostering Opioid Recovery through Workforce Development. Addicts will have skills tests while in recovery and training will be provided to help with job placement upon completion of recovery programs.
