Florida News That Impacts South Floridians Oct. 9th

This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Today is the first day of in-person classroom education for Broward County public schools. With Broward online, it’s the first time all 67-school districts have offered classroom education options since the lockdowns began in March.

In other news, the investigation into the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition’s effort to pay off debts of selective felons with the purpose of having them vote in November 3rd's election has exited the review phase and entered the information gathering phase. According to the FDLE, In a preliminary inquiry, where we are now, we start to obtain documents and conduct research. The expansion of the investigation suggests potential impropriety has taken place. Over $22 million have been used to pay off debts of minority felons who unlawfully registered to vote earlier this year. Michael Bloomberg has funded the effort with approximately $17 million, other top donors include Lebron James, John Legend, and the Miami Heat.

Next week’s debate originally scheduled to take place at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami has officially been canceled. This comes on back of the Presidential Debate Commission’s unilateral decision to change the format to a virtual setting which President Trump has rejected.

Lastly, the Burmese python recently captured by sanctioned hunter Kevin Pavlidis, who has captured over 400 pythons, was confirmed to be a record-setter according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Measuring 18 feet - 9 inches and weighing in at 104 pounds,– it's the largest snake ever captured in the Everglades. Additionally, it was a female which FWC called a triumph for Florida’s native wildlife.
