This is a daily recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida. Florida’s weekly average COVID-19 case count has dropped to the lowest level since June 17th. This is especially notable with the state having entered Phase 3 reopening twelve days ago and the average incubation period pacing 5 days.
Florida’s voter registration deadline was extended to 7 pm Tuesday after late-day outages were reported for the state’s website on Monday. According to Secretary of State Laurel Lee, the site was averaging 1.1 million requests per hour Monday afternoon, she said that was unprecedented. Florida has 14 million registered voters in total. Federal and state law enforcement agencies are investigating.
The 2020 Human Trafficking Summit on Tuesday revealed 896 known confirmed cases of human trafficking in Florida in 2019. That’s up from 760 the year before and has more than doubled over five years ago. Attorney General Ashley Moody chaired the summit warned and that the Super Bowl and pandemic have potentially exacerbated the threat in Florida this year. Florida is third in total known cases nationally.
Lastly, starting today, Florida’s Division of Emergency Management is sending the Abbott rapid COVID-19 tests to long-term care facilities and schools across the state. Recently the state secured 400,000+ rapid tests to be shipped to our state per week.
