A statue of explorers Lewis & Clark and their Native American guide, Sacagawea, may be removed from a park in Charlottesville.
Meriwether Lewis was born in the Charlottesville area.
The statue is coming under new criticism because of the way it depicts Sacagawea. While the men are standing, looking off into the distance, the Shoshone woman is crouching and appears to be in a subordinate position. Some have said the artist depicted Sacagawea in a tracking position. The statue was a gift to the city back in 1919.
The Charlottesville council, after talking with Sacagawea's descendants, directed staff to make plans to remove the statue next month.
Removal of the statue is part of a larger streetscape project in the city.
