A medical team in Melbourne, Australia is about to implant the world's first bionic eye.
Right out of "The Six-Million Dollar Man," the eye uses the computer power of a smart phone combined with micro electrodes that are implanted in the brain.
According to TechCrunch the Gennaris bionic vision system bypasses damaged optic nerves, transmitting signals directly to the brain.
The eye isn't as portable as Col. Steve Austin's, yet. This version includes custom headgear, a camera, and a wireless transmitter.
Developers are now seeking additional funding to eventually make the bionic eye available on a global scale.
