S FL Mayors See Positive Signs From New COVID Numbers

We're not in the clear yet, but with Florida's daily total of slightly more than 4,000 new cases with a positivity rate of 8.6%, local elected officials and doctors are cautiously optimistic we're seeing the light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said yesterday the county's 14-day rolling average positivity rate is down to just a little over 15%, and he Tweeted his thanks to residents for keeping Miami-Dade safe.

Miami-Dade had 1,100 new cases with more than 600 in Broward.

Broward Mayor Dale Holness said last week the county is on a good track.

He Tweeted hospitals are seeing a downward trend in positive cases, and house parties are down.

If this virus is like the seasonal flu, Epidemiologist Dr. Robert Cook hopes Florida's outbreak has peaked and with so many people exposed, there could be immunity building in the community.

He believes the biggest risk of transmission is face to face shouting in close contact.

Dr. Cook says he wouldn't be shocked if numbers go back up if bars reopen and beaches get crowded again.

He also believes the reopening of schools will be a wild card.

Local mayors are encouraged by the recent coronavirus numbers.
