COVID-19 May 28th Update

After crossing the 100,000 death threshold in the past day, the news didn’t change much nationally on Wednesday. Total cases in the United States were slightly higher than the three previous days but still below the two-week trendline. There are now 1,745,803 cases, 102,107 deaths, and 490,130 recoveries in the United States. We did seek a spike in new deaths however, with deaths totaling the most since May 19th. It’s a reminder than the threat of the virus was and is very real. COVID-19 is the deadliest virus in the United States since the 1918 pandemic which killed an estimated 500,000 people.

Worldwide, Brazil and Russia are now second and third in total cases and continue to see rapid growth, and remain the world’s newest hot spots. There are now 5,803,099 cases, 357,693 deaths, and 2,508,830 recoveries around the world.

In Florida, the news was pretty good yesterday. we now have 52,634 cases and 2,320 deaths with just 379 new diagnosed cases, it was the best day for our state since May 8th. This continues to illustrate Florida’s success in reopening the state while increasing testing and experiencing a reduction in new cases.

Florida continues to outperform the country as a whole. The overall positive test rate in Florida dropped to another new low of 5.6%. That's down from a peak of 11%. However, more than half of all of Florida’s cases remain in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.

As a reminder, the newest diagnosed cases are new cases obtained through community spread. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing and wearing masks in public.
