COVID-19 Update For April 6th

This daily update is designed to put everything into perspective with straight-forward facts. The weekend was filled with additional cases, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was hospitalized after having contracted COVID-19 and a strong message from US Surgeon General Jerome Adams. America’s Doctor warned that this week will be the hardest and saddest for most Americans. He likened what we’re set to experience as our Pearl Harbor and 9/11 moment of the coronavirus crisis while saying there was light at the end of this tunnel. Speaking of improvement, New York had fewer deaths reported on Sunday than Saturday. It was the first improvement from one day to the next since the onset of the issues in New York. New York state, on its own, is third in the world in diagnosed cases behind Italy and Spain.

As of this entry, there are 12,350 cases and 221 deaths in Florida. In the United States, there are 336,851 cases, 9,620 deaths, and 17,977 recovered. Around the world, there are 1,276,117 cases, 69,509 deaths, and 265,943 recoveries.

We experienced more than 258k additional cases worldwide over the weekend, with 91k new cases in the US and over 3,500 deaths. The most disconcerting aspect of the virus remains the death/recovery rate based on closed cases. The death rate rose to 21% worldwide over the weekend. This after having reached a low of 6% about a month ago. We’ve seen the death rate rise as the reach of the virus grows. The common pattern with the virus spreading is an increase in death rates with vulnerable early on, followed by improving rates overtime as people begin to recover.

We had 3,342 new cases and 77 deaths in Florida over the weekend. If you’re looking for silver linings, Florida improved to 7th in the country in total cases and remained 9th in deaths despite being the third most populous state. More than 100,000 Floridians have been tested for COVID-19. Florida’s test rate per population exceeds the US average considerably, illustrating that the state has been aggressive and more effective than most in the rollout of testing. We’re performing far better than most states on a relative basis.

The range in age for positive tests in our state are infants to 103. Obviously, it can find its way to anyone. More than half of all of Florida’s cases currently are in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.

  • Broward: 1,886
  • Miami-Dade: 4,146
  • Palm Beach: 1,000

We continue to see a high rate of positive test results in Florida. To date, nearly 11% of all tests for COVID-19 have come back positive. The further into testing we go, the more likely the newest diagnosed cases are new cases, especially with the high positive test rate. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing and safer-at-home declarations. The highest concentration of cases is coming from those between the ages of 45-54.
