COVID-19 Update April 2nd

This daily update is designed to put everything into perspective with straight-forward facts. On Tuesday, President Trump prepared us for a rough two weeks and on Wednesday we began to see why. The US crossed 200 thousand cases and five thousand deaths. We also learned from intelligence reporting that China almost certainly has under-reported what’s happened in their country and the Coronavirus Task Force said the under-reporting almost certainly created a larger threat around the world as governments were analyzing inaccurate data. Currently, China is shown to have the 4th most cases in the world with the lowest death rate reported for closed cases at 4%.

In Florida, we have 7,773 cases and 101 deaths. In the US, there are 215,344 cases, 5,112 deaths, and 8,878 recovered. Worldwide, there are 937,941 cases, 47,273 deaths, and 195,188 recovered.

We experienced more than 77k additional cases worldwide on Wednesday with more than 26,000 new cases in the US and 1,057 deaths. The United States continues to lead the world in total cases by a wide margin over Italy and Spain. In more promising news, more than 1,600 Americans were proven to have beaten the virus as we have more total recoveries than deaths in our country.

Focusing on our state, we’ve had 1,032 new cases and 16 deaths in Florida over the past 24 hours. If you’re looking for silver linings, the new case numbers were actually lower than Tuesday and have been lower than the previous day, two of the previous three days in Florida. Also, Florida remains 5th in the country in total cases and 10th in deaths despite being the third most populous state. We’re performing far better than most states on a relative basis.

Wednesday was also the day Governor DeSantis officially declared a safer-at-home order for the entire state. All of South Florida from Palm Beach County through Monroe had already been under one. The range in age for positive tests in our state ranges from an infant to 101. More than half of all of Florida’s cases currently are in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.

  • Broward: 1,348
  • Miami-Dade: 2,202
  • Palm Beach: 616

We continue to see a high rate of positive test results in Florida. To date, 11% of all tests for COVID-19 have come back positive. That’s up again over the past day which seems to indicate that community spread is occurring. The further into testing we go the more likely the newest diagnosed cases are new cases, especially with the positive test rate heading higher.
