Coronavirus Update For March 24th

This daily update is designed to put everything into perspective with straight-forward facts. Monday continued to show the rapid detection of the virus across the country. A quarter of all cases diagnosed worldwide were within the US yesterday. This may be the result of improved testing and documenting what people already have, not necessarily that the spreading of the virus has worsened, though it’s possible. Monday also brought about seven additional states issuing additional restrictions.

Right now, in Florida, there are 1,227 instate cases, 17 deaths, and two recovered. In the US, there are 46,145 cases, 582 deaths, and 295 recovered. Around the world, there are 341,329 cases, 16,568 deaths, and 102,505 recovered.

Monday brought over 41,000 additional cases worldwide, with more than 11,000 new cases in the US. The United States remains 3rd in the world in total cases, behind China and Italy. The most disconcerting aspect of the virus at this point remains the death/recovery rate based on closed cases. We have nearly double the deaths to recoveries in the US thus far and worldwide the death rate has spiked to 14%. We’ve seen the death rate rise as the reach of the virus grows. The common pattern with the virus spreading is an increase in death rates with vulnerable early on, followed by improving rates over time as people begin to recover. Those are just the facts.

Also on Monday, we saw just over 200 new cases in Florida and the virus is now present in all 67 counties. We also had four additional deaths attributed to COVID-19. In Governor DeSantis’s most recent update, he indicated that he still wasn’t mandating an “at home” order for all Floridians as several states have done but to take the existing advisories and closings seriously. The governor did issue an order to close all state parks and for travelers from New York and New Jersey to self-quarantine for 14 days after traveling to Florida.

The range in age for positive tests in our state ranges from 6 to 96. More than half of all of Florida’s cases currently are in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state.

  • Broward: 263
  • Miami-Dade: 278
  • Palm Beach:89

We continue to see a high rate of positive test results in Florida. To date, 10% of all tests for COVID-19 have come back positive. That’s down from 20% percent last week, which is improved news. Still, it remains much higher than the guidance provided by the Coronavirus Task Force of 1%-4% worldwide. This would seem to suggest many Floridians had the virus and are just being documented and not necessarily an indication of greater spread. There are 1,101 outstanding tests awaiting results, expect these numbers to continue to increase today.
