Here's a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.
Miami Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez officially announced his run for Congress in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Freshman Democrat Debbie-Murcasel Powell. The district was a key pickup for Democrats taking control of the House in 2018. It's a key race to watch again this year.
In other news, the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission has completed its review of judicial candidates to fill Florida’s two Supreme Court vacancies. Nine have been recommended to Governor DeSantis who now has up to 60 days to make the two appointments.
In the state session, the Parent’s Bill of Rights legislation which would mandate parental notification of controversial educational issues being addressed in the classroom and parental consent for medical care services for children at school advanced in the House yesterday. Also, the DNA protection bill banning DNA data sharing for insurance companies use has passed all House committees and is now on set to be voted on by the full House.
In real estate news, the total home sales boomed in South Florida in December according to the National Association of Realtors. Sales in Broward jumped 14%, while Miami-Dade sales were up 16% year over year and Palm Beach County saw a 20% increase.
