'You lit her on fire' Florida Judge Scolds Man Who Killed Girlfriend

A Miami man sentenced to 40 years in prison for torching his girlfriend to death tries to convince a judge that it was her fault.

Jesus Alvarez told the judge,“ she pushed me to do something like that.” This statement prompted a heated conversation between Alvarez and Judge Venzer.

“Mr. Alvarez, when you put gasoline on someone and light a match, it’s generally not a good outcome, you lit her on fire. Your lack of empathy is astonishing,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ellen Sue Venzer.

Alvarez agreed to serve 40 years in prison for the 2011 murder of Margarita Blanco in Northwest Miami-Dade. Police said Alvarez beat Blanco inside her trailer home before dousing her with gas. She was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where she died from severe burns.
