BSO Deputy Accused of Sexual Battery on a Child

Broward County detention deputy, Verol Cowan is facing accusations of sexual battery on a child under the age of 12.

Cowans was arrested by Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s deputies where he worked at Joseph V. Conte Facility in Pompano Beach.

The 58-year-old was taken on Friday to the Broward’s Main Jail and placed on a no bond hold. On Sunday, Cowan was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail and booked on four counts of sexual battery on a person less than 12 years old.

Following his arrest, BSO suspended Cowans without pay.

The Port St. Lucie resident was hired as a BSO detention deputy in Feb. of 2005, according to the sheriff’s office. He retired at the end of June, 2011 for personal reasons and was rehired in his position on Feb.13, 2013.

“The sexual battery charges Cowans is facing are very disturbing, and I demand lawful, honorable conduct from all BSO employees,” said Sheriff Gregory Tony.
