Lawmakers Propose New Emotional Support Animal Regulations

South Florida lawmakers want to crack down on people who lie about needing an emotional support animal.

Animals previously listed as ESAs include; a kangaroo, pig, turkey, goat miniature horse, monkey and the list goes on.

"While some people genuinely need emotional support animals, others are abusing the system by going online to get their pet declared an emotional support animal by a doctor they have never seen in person," said state Sen. Kevin Rader of Boca Raton.

The heated debate between condominium communities and pet owners citing federal fair housing laws to gain special accommodations is a growing problem.

Lawmakers plan to address these issues in a new bill to tighten regulations on what qualifies as an emotional support animal.
