Davey Hamilton Jr. allegedly lured his ex-girlfriend, Angelica Hickey, to a hotel by posing as the owner of a vodka company.
According to police, Hickey believed she was going to be a brand ambassador paid $5,000 for her appearance. The fake booking included flying into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and accommodations at the Hyatt Place in West Palm Beach.
When she arrived at the hotel, she received a text that her room key was under the door and "to get ready."
Hickey's trip turned beyond scary when she entered her room and attempted to take a shower.
Police say, Hamilton Jr., was hiding inside, opened the curtain and yelled while holding a 10-inch knife. He also tried blocking her from leaving, grabbed a roll of duct tape and started questioning her about the end of their relationship, according to the arrest report.
Eventually, Hamilton Jr. told Hickey to get dressed. She then ran out of the room down the emergency exit yelling for help.
A short time later, he was taken into custody near Palm Beach Atlantic University.
During questioning, Hamilton Jr. claimed he only wanted to scare her and admitted to using different phone numbers to lure his ex-girlfriend. The 21-year-old also said the duct tape and knife were purchased at a nearby Walmart.
Hamilton Jr., who is the son of former Indy 500 competitor Davey Hamilton, has competed in the Indy Lights and Speed Energy Formula Off-Road series. He was being held at the main Palm Beach County jail Wednesday morning on a $30,000 bond.
