Tesla Burns After Deadly Crash in Davie

A Tesla traveling northbound near the 1300 block of S. Flamingo Road, crashed into several trees and then burst into flames two times, according to the Davie Police Department.

The car accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

According to Davie Police, the battery powered vehicle burst into flames killing the driver, Omar Awan, beyond recognition.

"Efforts to extract the driver were unsuccessful,” said Davie Police Sgt. Mark Leone.

Investigators believe Awan over-corrected when he lost control which resulted in the vehicle sliding across three lanes of traffic.

Witnesses told police, the Telsa appeared to be traveling between 75-90 mph before veering off towards the median.

The 4-door 2016 Model S was eventually taken to a tow yard where it re-ignited and caught fire once again from a ruptured battery.
