Miami Art Week Means Stepped-Up Security At Events

Miami Art Week means stepped up police presence all over South Florida for the many events taking place. Miami police Chief Jorge Colina says his officers will be keeping a close eye on the crowds. Law enforcement will have help from additional cameras being installed, and traffic closures to assist with crowd control. Northwest 2nd Avenue will be closed to drivers Friday through Sunday between 20th and 29th Streets from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Art Basel hits Miami Beach this week, but renovation work on the convention center still isn't finished. In a recent letter to the mayor and city commission, City Manager Jimmy Morales said there's still a long "to do" list, but it won't disrupt Art Basel when it sets up in the center's four exhibit halls.

Morales reports that the 615-million-dollar project is on budget and should be completed by spring. Soon, the focus will shift to a new convention center hotel project which was approved by voters last month.
